To begin with tonight’s performance comes across as big, no messing-around rock. Had it continued to do so this could have been a really fun show, so it’s a shame that musically there didn’t appear to be a huge amount going on here as the set progressed.
There is much banging of heads, drums and even guitars to be honest as all band members (aside from the rhythm guitarist) seem hell-bent on hitting their instruments as hard as possible. While this is all very ‘rock n roll’ it does mean that we get a ‘wall of sound’ effect rather than engaging tracks. Tighter vocals and sharper individual beats on ‘Come out Fighting’ add colour and really should feature more often.
But the main thing I would say to Dirty Money is this; you have two guitarists- use them. Technically they are both very good, and there are some decent solos but they don’t sing out enough and too often both guys just seem to thrash away at the same chords.
I would add that the recorded tracks on their Myspace actually sound much better. It would seem that they basically need to sharpen up their live show if they’re going put their songs out more effectively.
5/10
