Now this was something a bit different. If an award existed for the largest number of rhythm changes ever to grace one seven-track set, it would surely go to these guys. But amid all the visual quirks (e.g. the bassist wore ski-goggles, much to the crowd’s delight), tempo changes, almost Keith Moon-esque drumming, contrasting guitar effects and energetic vocals, Ded Mole Crickit put on a very tight performance that flowed convincingly whilst maintaining a fun sense of unpredictability. ‘Last of the Hardcore’ opened with heavy rock chords before moving into a laid-back, almost reggae pace. ‘Sub-Human Beings’ had a more dancey feel to it, and ‘Death Ska Vendetta’ was perhaps the best demonstration of their eclectic sound, featuring high-speed minimalist grooves and a surreal, spaced-out section with a bluesy solo. All this was lifted by their undeniable stage-presence as a group and animated yet natural performance style. Great set, a must-see.
