Hmm. Split this review into two. Firstly, the covers. Very good. ‘Creeping Death’ and ‘Of Wolf and Man’ (Metallica) were faithful, and certainly would’ve been received well by an audience of metalheads rather than college girls hanging around just for popularity’s sake. I hate Trivium, but ‘Dying in Your Arms’ sounded great.
Secondly, their own songs. Not quite as good. Unfortunately, the Metallica covers, combined with the fat that the singer sounds remarkably like Hetfield, set the standard far too high for most bands, never mind one just starting out, which is more of a tribute to Metallica then Levaithan, as latter’s material did have its merits. ‘Serpent Moon’ contained an impressive drum solo, and even some harmonized leads. ‘Detonation’s riffing was strong, but not as strong as their covers; this is a potentially great band who played far too many covers. More of their material needs to be played in order to stand out, and they shouldn’t be afraid of playing it either.
