Refreshingly intriguing and well-thought out, Trial of Origin succeeded in creating an interesting, engaging display of ambient experimental indie, giving the audience a lot to think about in a relatively short set. Ringing telecaster lead lines and chords, driving arrangements in tracks such as ‘Trains’, effective use of reverb in ‘New Water’; all were present and all were united by beautifully sincere lead vocals. Post-rock elements appeared in certain instrumental passages – most notably in new track ‘Leaving Certificate’ – and a contemplative, almost dream-like atmosphere prevailed throughout, though with variations in tempo and crescendos that established sufficient edge to prevent tracks from losing impact. We were a little surprised at the sudden arrival of virtually nu-rave synths in set-closer ‘Midnight’, but they paved the way for distorted guitar chords and a bigger range of sounds that made a fitting high-point on which to end a very good performance.
8/10
