Great way to kick off the new year. Smith6079 are essentially U2 with balls, and a singer who can, well, sing. Influenced by classic and blues rock, but also by modern indie boppers Kasabian, Smith6079 moved fans, reviewers, and if walls had emotions, they’d be swaying as well. This band’s enormous sound gave kilowatt loads of energy to ‘Kill Romeo’s gorgeous minor guitar hooks and ‘Dear Death’s heavy blues groove. At times their ideas have a best-before date shorter than the band would think and this does hurt their set’s consistency (‘Bombs’ and ‘Damn the Music’ seemed to go on a bit too long), but it’s an insignificant issue. By the end of the swaggering riff of ‘The Letter’, Smith6079 had justified Fly Magazine’s claim; Smith6079 are certainly one’s to watch.
